Immigrants are usually blamed for less jobs, less houses and not enough school places for children, and the good they bring to London is quite often overlooked.
Recently, a report on UK immigration was leaked to Newsnight. It concluded that the influx of EU migrants has had a largely positive result- They have a good work ethic and are less likely to use benefits, in comparison to Britons.
Immigrants are actually boosting London's economy, findings from University College London's migration research unit, found that, European immigrants have contributed up to 34% more in tax, then they have in benefits for a period of ten years. Quite impressive really, what is highlighted here, is that immigrants understand the importance and productivity of paying their way for essentials and luxuries during their stay in foreign countries.
Not only is immigration developing London's monetary economy, but it is assisting London's cultural and social economy. London is only exciting and interesting as it is now, due to the enormous amounts of ethnic and religious diversity, which contributes to the food, leisure and culture in our city. It is the cultural exchange of languages, festivals and lifestyles that teaches us understanding and appreciation for the people of the world.
However, although immigration brings positive structural changes for London and other countries, immigrants are often unfairly stigmatised for causing harm and nuisance. For example, many African immigrants are looked down upon, as they are thought to carry and spread diseases such as AIDS. Though many immigrants, from whatever continent they may be native to, one should sympathise with those who have contracted illnesses, rather than have ill feelings towards these migrants. What people should remember is, it is not only immigrants that may carry these deadly diseases, but ordinary people too, it could be the person sitting next to you on the train, a family member, you never know ..
I conducted a Vox-Pop, and asked the question, 'How do you think immigration is affecting the community in London?'. Below are the responses I got.
'I think immigration is a natural occurrence and stage within humanity and the development of earth in general, however the means to accommodate then aren't so easy, since we have stinking rich politicians claiming these usually poor immigrants are the reason for lack of wealth within said communities,' said Gus Brooks-Simpson, 20, from Forest Hill.
'While other people would argue that there are less jobs due to immigration, I disagree and view it as a positive opportunity to push harder and get my desired job and now jobs come easily, it also awakens you work ethic, that I believe most Londoners lack, which is why immigrants are able to get the so called jobs that are 'stolen' from the British,' said Caron Cuff, 19, from Kingston.
'Bare foreigners who seem not to be a culture where they use deodorant, stinking up the tube,' remarked an anonymous source.
While there seems to be mixed feelings about immigrants in general, it is important we empathise towards the reasons why immigrants migrate in the first place. It is only in this way, we can achieve consensus and work together to build a strong community, which creates beneficial aspects for everyone.
