Since the terrible and immoral killing of American journalist James Foley, there has been moral panic worldwide, amongst Muslims and Non-Muslims alike. As a young Muslimah living in London, I am outraged at the killing of Foley and my deepest condolences and respects go to his family and friends.
The government really do need to do their bit and pull up their socks, in order to tackle those Muslims who may hold radicalised views. How many more innocent lives need to be taken, how many more awkward glances should Muslims be given, for the government to wake up and make an impact on this issue, to bring the world safety and peace.
I understand that there has been recent talks of Home Secretary Theresa May bringing in an anti social behaviour order to deter terrorist attacks home and abroad. Although potential terrorists may have 16- hour curfews and be placed afar from their homes and denied any communication, I still have this anxiety within me. But all we can do now, is pray and hope for the best. This new law may not abolish all terrorism, but it may help to reduce the amount of attacks, which is a positive in its own respects.
New structural changes are taking place to uphold security to the highest level possible. Muslim groups and Islamic political organizations will be targeted and under heavy surveillance.
Although the government has made intervention in order to protect us, they have faced huge criticism for not being successful in preventing young British men and women flying to Syria to fight as jihadists. Early detection is in my opinion, one of the best ways to tackle the issue. There is no point blaming the government, the media or Islam for any of this. Families should be monitoring any unusual changes in their child/'s behaviour patterns and flagging it up, in order to avoid a rise in extremist views.
Not only is the majority's safety at risk, but more so for Muslims and the reputation of Islam. Those individuals who are undertaking these attacks and being involved in terrorist activity, do not represent the principles of Islam in the Qur'an. Islam promotes peace, not chaos and deaths.
It says in the holy Qur'an :
“…if any one slew a person - unless it be for murder or for spreading mischief in the land - it would be as if he slew the whole people: and if any one saved a life, it would be as if he saved the life of the whole people."
This verse speaks volume in itself. If we are ever to eradicate and reduce terrorism, I believe people need to be educated on Islam to a larger extent, in order to prevent any misinterpretation that lead to terrorism as well as combat any prejudiced views some may hold about Islam.
