I don't know if it is my distrust in the policing system and the overtly militant personality exercised by officers which makes me detest bully vans .. but, I am starting to wonder how and if the Met are being innovative in their approach to gain the public's trust and support.
On and around International Woman's Day (which falls on March 8th), thousands of women gather from the UK and beyond to protest for an environment in which women can live safely, without being threatened by male violence. The Million Woman Rise (MWR) is a protest organized solely by volunteers, which has been running over the past seven years. Over the years the Metropolitan police have backed the security of this protest/event in Central London.
However, this year things are changing .. the police have informed the organizers that they can no longer provide security, and the people in charge of this movement should employ their own stewarding employees, which can have quite hight costs that cannot be afforded by the people involved.
In addition, many of the women who will potentially be participating, will have suffered domestic abuse, both mental and physical or know someone close to them that has. Therefore, the woman may perhaps feel vulnerable and at risk, without police presence for rallying so pro-actively. Police can play chase with petty thugs and criminals, but not provide the appropriate backing that marginalized members of society may need to get on with their lives. Are they really doing their job? Why have they all of a sudden .. ceased to provide attendance ? Funding cuts? Have they got somewhere better to be .. parked up on a side road to target another young man from an ethnic minority background?
Sabrina Qureshi, the primary organizer has decided to go along with the March, which will take place on Saturday the 7th of March. There will be a point of meeting for women interested at Trafalgar Square on the day. I admire Qureshi's determination to go ahead with making a change to the well being of people and wish everyone involved best wishes.
